The Klamath Tribes
We know that historically Oregon’s early learning and education system have not adequately supported tribal students and their families with high quality early learning programs. As a result, tribal students have among the lowest reading scores in the state. To learn about existing partnerships and programs designed to curb this trend, and to better understand barriers to early literacy building tribal families face, we engaged with Klamath tribal leaders, parents, community organizations and libraries.
Through a series of conversations we engaged the community in helping us determine how communication to, and engagement with tribal families about literacy building can alleviate barriers and demonstrate how families can turn cultural activities into learning and literacy building opportunities for their children.
On October 29th, we’ll be launching stORytime at an event that brings together students, community and education leaders, local businesses, libraries and elected officials for a celebration at Chiloquin Elementary. The event will build excitement for students, empower families and challenge the community to come together to put local students on a path to lifelong success by helping to ensure they are reading proficiently by third grade.
